I served 12 years in the Air Force. I had used numerous service officers over a 3 year period to get my disability claim processed with no success. It wasn't until I worked with a VFW credited service officer that I was able to get my claim processed and approved. In late 2020, I left a job because my employer said, "We don't hire veterans because they are broken." The comment was made about me because I was receiving mental health care at the VA. Although I had coordinated the standing appointment time with the employer and my care team at the VA. I was still publicly humiliated and made to question my purpose. So, in late 2019, I was left with no job, no income. My VFW service officer went to work on my claim. Tracking where it was and getting it moving through the process. In March of 2020, on the first day of the Covid-19 shutdown I walked down to my mailbox and inside was a check for my disability claim. The check was enough to get me caught up on my bills, gave me a continuum of care, and it allowed me to go back to college and eventually graduate with my degree in public relations. I was also able to service as State Commander for the Tennessee Veterans of Foreign Wars which lead me to my current position as Assistant Adjutant General of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and recently I have been accepted into a Masters program at Johns Hopkins University. The impact an accredited service officer can have on a veterans life/future/health is incredible. It changed my life, future and health!
