EMERGENCY UPDATE ON MOROCCO

ShelterBox is responding to help families affected by the earthquake in Morocco to support the communities left most vulnerable with aid such as tents, blankets, solar lights, and kitchen sets. We are working close with the local Rotary District leaders and NGO's as we assess the conditions in the high Atlas mountains. The devastation is widespread and access to remote villages is difficult.

October 15th update-

Our aid has began to arrive in country. ShelterBox will implement this project in collaboration with Association Le Grand Atlas and Rotary in Morocco, District 9010. ShelterBox is responsible for overseeing and managing all activities in the affected areas, including needs assessments, community engagement and distributions. Association Le Grand Atlas is primarily overseeing the international importation, warehousing, trucking and the coordination with government stakeholders, as well as providing team members to assist SB with activities in the mountains. And lastly, Rotary in Morocco, District 9010, will be supporting these activities where possible and continue using their networks where required. Our initial project aims to support at least 1,200 households with tented shelter, high thermal blankets, solar lights, and kitchen sets. The charter with aid materials has arrived. Aid was released through customs on the next day and offloaded in Marrakech warehouse. With support from volunteers and Rotarians, several hundred households worth of aid materials have been packed in woven bags. First trucks have departed Marrakech towards the our response area mountains warehouse early this week and the first distributions will soon take place.

EMERGENCY UPDATE ON LIBYA

Storm Daniel hit north-east Libya on September 10th carrying strong winds and torrential rainfall causing flash flooding.
The sudden deluge caused two dams to burst in the port city of Derna. The sudden pressure of water forced three-metre-high waves through the streets, flattening entire neighborhoods in a manner very similar to a tsunami.

October 15th update-

According to IOMs displacement matrix, about 40,000 people remained displaced due to the floods.

There has been agreement to proceed with a remote ShelterBox response in Libya partnering with ACTED who already
have a presence in country. Current shelter needs vary, but Non-Food Items (NFI) such as kitchen sets, water containers, hygiene kits and sleeping systems are priorities. Winter clothing is also an essential requirement as winter approaches. Libya's wet season runs from October to December, bringing a constant threat of further flooding. Displacement patterns are changing with local authorities looking to re-open local schools which are currently used as collection centres around Derna. Many affected families are moving to other local communities to stay with host families or collection centres in cities such as Benghazi. National-led recovery planning is slow and complex with two opposing governments in Libya.

International rescue teams have begun to phase out, and the humanitarian response is scaling up, and coordination mechanisms have been fully established in Benghazi. Assessments and participant registration process will begin this week and is expected to take up to two weeks for data collection and analysis, while concurrently we have started
the procurement process with several suppliers identified. We expect distributions to start soon after.

ShelterBox is an international disaster relief humanitarian organization that responds urgently to shelter needs following earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, hurricanes, cyclones, tsunamis, or conflicts.

Working with local partners and individuals, we distribute customized emergency shelter and household supplies based on the specific needs of the communities we serve. Aid can include a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, tarps, warm clothing, mosquito nets, a water filtration system and storage, emergency lighting, and other tools for survival.

Recently ShetlerBox responded to the catastrophic earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, and devastating floods in Pakistan. ShelterBox has ongoing programs in Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Somalia, and Yemen.

A rapidly growing part of ShelterBox's work is in conflict zones. Last year, for example, ShelterBox launched multiple programs that have helped more than 50,000 people displaced by the war in Ukraine. We are also working in Ethiopia and have been delivering aid in Syria for over a decade.
