A message from Rulan Tangen, Founding Artistic Director/Choreographer of DANCING EARTH :

I am so honored to announce that I have been chosen by the Conseil International de la Danse, to perform onstage at Emmeleia World Dance Festival in Athens, Greece in late September 2024.

As you know, I have been in tireless service of successive generations of BIPOC artists for a long time, celebrating Dancing Earth’s 20th anniversary this year. And, I have noticed that I do not see many middle aged BIPOC women on stages. So this is my time to embody this aspect of the advocacy I have always given to all those whose presence and voice is under-represented in the arts. This is a chance to center the importance of artistic maturity, as cultivated through decades of discipline and dedication to the great art of movement.

While in Europe, I will be meeting with other leaders and culture carriers in dance, somatic arts, and education (will select between colleagues in Portugal, Spain, London, France and welcome any introductions that you may want to make), to cultivate more relations within the continent of my some of my ancestors, as part of an ongoing commitment to embodiment as a form of knowledge transmission, learning and exchange, for personal, intercultural, ecosystemic and planetary understanding, balance and wellness. In particular I will be learning about European eco sustainability efforts, somatic practices in support of new immigrant populations, riparian system cleanup, movement for differently baked communities and more. At the completion of the time in Europe I will be bringing what has been gathered directly to Mexico for the next phase of embodied community research and collaboration for ongoing mesquite advocacy work.

This CID invitation comes at a significant moment mid-life, and I am humbled that my gifts can be of service to this great vision. In support of this trip, a Maori dance artist who I have mentored since 2026 is fundraising herself to assist me with travel and present her own duet onstage. I am thrilled that this invitation has motivated leadership, responsibility and reciprocity from remarkable artists of this generation, marking another stage in the nurturance I have given for over 20 years in all aspects of arts, from coaching in unique movement approaches to lighting to budgets and producing).

FUNDRAISING GOAL

I have consistently given of my funds, time, energy towards the continuance of Dancing Earth for the past 20 years. Now, I am making a financial goal of $5,700 by Aug 31st, so that flights can be purchased in advance to get the best rate.

$1,800 : Rulan’s airfare from US to/from three international destinations
$750 : Internal airfares or ppl or popa train/boat within Europe
$550 : Ground transport (Lyfts, bus, subway etc)
$750 : Accommodations (approx 750 value for in kind hosting for half the trip)
$500 : Travel insurance and global health insurance
$1,350 : Per diem and equipment for 7 weeks : economical meals, and daily needs such as SIM card, adjusted phone plan, travel charger, mini portable speaker, promotional materials.

If you have capacity, I embrace your support, which is not only for me, but for inter-cultural exchange that benefits local host communities and their eco systems, and the network of opportunities for artists with whom I work.

MY COMMITMENT

If I raise more than this amount, or am able to save on any of the above items (or donated frequent flier mileage), any additional funds will go towards extending or enhancing the current itinerary. Those who know me know of my dedication to making opportunities for others, and sharing anything that comes my way!

HOW THESE CREATIVE SEEDS WILL GROW

This invitation grows the visibility of the tender and powerful eco-arts vision and lived eco-somatic research of Dancing Earth to be carried by me for the first time to Europe. I hope to extend the circle of interest in arts for planetary healing. All my creative and cultural exchanges currently nourish my creativity towards subsequent iterations of the emergent series “ECO ELEGIES : The RITUALs of RE:MIX.” Versions have been made with and for artists and communities in California, Mexico with continued invitations to translate this embodiment exploration into local community rituals, workshops, retreats.

MY THANKS

I am in deep gratitude already as many of you helped me journey to Amazon's last summer as part of Lab Verde where I joined a multidisciplinary platform for the development of critical thinking about nature and ecology. Artists, activists, indigenous, scientists and other agents of knowledge come together to recognize and narrate nature, in an attempt to create new ways of existing and interacting with the natural environment, as well as to speculate on possible futures.” This is one aspect of important international opportunities I have been a part of in Mexico with collaborative creations about the mesquite tree, in Colombia with projects with Indigenous representatives about water.I thank you so much for considering the support of this invitation to Europe. I look forward to sharing about the experience!

DANCING EARTH CREATIONS dynamically activates our mission, to create contemporary dance and related arts through global indigenous and intercultural relationships centered on ecological and cultural diversity for creativity, health, and wellness.

Founded by Artistic Director Rulan Tangen, to serve a need rarely met in the USA, DEC gives hope and opportunity to Native, mixed, global Indigenous, and BIPOC talent who have been largely outside the dialogue of mainstream performance because of lack of access. DEC is an organic constellation of largely self-taught dancers, composers, costumers, filmmakers, and spoken word artists.

Together, DEC artists work with community members, culture carriers, and Native elders to explore the rich diversity of ancestral heritage, contemporary identity, and intra-cultural relationship building, by collaborating on innovative ecologically themed performances. DEC’s work promotes environmental awareness, cultural diversity, and understanding between peoples through contemporary art expressions.

Dancing Earth is respectfully based in Ogaa Po Ogeh – occupied Tewa territory known as Santa Fe, NM and Yelamu – occupied Ohlone territory known as San Francisco, CA and are honored to bring this production here to the homelands of the Ute people: we are honored that this new work emerges from land and sky that has been danced and sung into renewal by First Nations people of the Southwest since the beginning of time, and this vision includes contributions of respected and beloved cultural community members.
