This past Fall 2022, relentless monsoon rains have left one-third of Pakistan underwater [unicefusa.org] and more than 3.4 million children are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. 33 million people have been affected by the heavy rains and floods and over 6.4 million are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. More than 1,000 people have died — a third of them children — and the death toll is expected to rise as flash flooding continues. According to the latest figures, over 912,000 houses have been fully or partially destroyed. Livestock, crops and orchards are gone, robbing families of their livelihoods.
UNICEF staff are on the ground right now [youtube.com], distributing critical supplies including safe drinking water, medical supplies and vaccines, therapeutic food supplies and hygiene kits for children and families. UNICEF is also establishing temporary learning centers and looking after the protection and psychosocial well-being of children caught up in the climate change-related crisis. Despite the challenges accessing some parts of the country, UNICEF has already delivered lifesaving humanitarian supplies worth $1 million. However more support is urgently needed as supplies need to be replenished.
The South Asian Bar Association (SABA) of North America and the SABA North America Foundation are partnering with UNICEF to raise funds for these incredibly important efforts. Donate today and help the children of Pakistan and their families through these turbulent times. Donate and save lives. Simply $12 can provide hygiene kits, $40 can provide learning material for children, $55 can provide therapeutic food for ill children, $175 can provide school-in-a-box materials for a classroom of 40-50 kids, and $3,100 can provide a tent to hold up to 12 people. In this season of giving and gratitude, please find it in your hearts to give to those in dire need.
