The City of Sacramento Office of Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Lavender Library, is thrilled to announce the establishment of the Sacramento LGBTQ+ Historic Experience Project, a pioneering initiative to support student stipends for the LGBTQ+ Experience Project. This collaborative effort aims to actively involve students in the documentation and preservation of LGBTQ+ history in Sacramento.

This groundbreaking initiative will be officially managed by the local non-profit and community space, the Lavender Library. The Library just celebrated its 25 years of serving the community—providing a safe and affirming place and maintaining a collection of powerful stories representing the full LGBTQ+ experience.

By donating today, your funds will be set aside to support the Sacramento Heroes of LGBTQ+ History Fund to research, document, develop community engagement, and create multimedia presentations highlighting the significant impact these LGBTQ+ Heroes had in the local community. Your support directly supports preserving the rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ history in Sacramento.

Concept Overview: The project will provide support in several categories, including Oral History, Scholarly Research, Historic Property Documentation, Community Engagement, and Multimedia. These stipends will empower students to contribute actively to the documentation and preservation of LGBTQ+ history, ensuring that diverse stories are heard, celebrated, and safeguarded for future generations.
Pledged Donations: We are delighted to announce that thanks to a generous private donation of $100,000, the work can begin quickly in 2024. The Lavender Library is looking for additional support to raise a total of $350,000 for this project. This substantial support underscores the community's commitment to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of LGBTQ+ history in our city.
About the Sacramento LGBTQ+ Historic Experience Project: The project is an initiative by the City of Sacramento Office of Historic Preservation to document and celebrate the oral histories of individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. The project, operating from January 2024 to December 31, 2024, seeks to create a thematic historical context statement for LGBTQ+ history in Sacramento.

If you are interested in honoring a local LGBTQ+ hero, ally, or champion and naming a stipend in their honor, you will be able to provide a name during the donation process. To name a stipend in their honor, a recommended donation of $10,000 will ensure the administrative and organizational support for the stipend.

The Library reserves the right to use up to 15% of the funds raised for administrative and operational expenses related to the LGBTQ+ Experience Project.
