Beacon Bounty Aquaponics

Part of the Garden 2 Table Urban Garden Initiative - Beacon Bounty Aquaponics empowers low-income, unhoused, and reentry communities in Seattle’s Beacon Hill and Rainier Beach neighborhoods by transforming compact urban spaces into sustainable food ecosystems. Through aquaponics—a closed-loop system combining fish farming and soil-free crop cultivation—we provide fresh, culturally relevant food to families in need while creating pathways to economic stability and self-reliance.

Community Need

Seattle’s Beacon Hill and Rainier Beach are vibrant, diverse neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by:

Food Apartheid: Limited access to fresh produce, with Rainier Beach classified as a food desert.

Income Inequality: 40% of households in Census Tract 110.01 earn below Seattle’s median income.

Systemic Barriers: High rates of homelessness (King County’s 2023 PIT count: 14,149 unhoused individuals) and unemployment among formerly incarcerated residents.

Our project directly addresses these challenges by turning underutilized spaces into 10' x 10' aquaponics hubs that grow nutrient-dense food and foster community resilience.
