This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to join us in supporting the Spirit of the Game through our "Support the Spirit" campaign. With your generous contributions we will be able to build a massive Ultimate community that empowers young athletes in our community, fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth.

This year, the SBYU Board has committed to matching the first $5000 in donations received! We also encourage you to check with your employer to see if they offer a donation matching benefit that your donation may be eligible for.

To help guide your decision making with how much you would like to donate to our program, consider some of the following examples of your purchasing power:

$10 - Pays for a new disc for a player
$30 - Pays for the shorts for a player's uniform
$50 - Pays for the jersey for a player
$75 - Pays for the whole uniform kit for a player
$100 - Pays for the "Recommended Price" of a season of coached practices for a player
$250 - Pays a coach for a tournament weekend
$500 - Pays for one team's registration fee for Beach of Dreams (we have 3 teams going this year!)
$1000 - Pays for the High School Team registration fee for State Championships

REMOVING FINANCIAL BARRIERS IN YOUTH SPORTS

Unlike most other youth sports organizations, SBYU operates with a reimbursement model with the intention of removing any financial barriers for youth to play Ultimate Frisbee. We front the costs of field rentals & tournament registration fees and ask that parents “Pay what you can” with a recommended price per player. We have found this model is helpful for new players to try Ultimate Frisbee for the first time without committing a significant amount of money up front.

As an example, a player’s parents can choose to pay $0 for a season of practices & tournament fees, with no questions asked.

We have broken the year into two seasons, fall and spring. Over the course of those two seasons, families can expect the following expenses:

Fall & Spring session practice registrations (Recommended price $100 per season)
2-3 Tournaments (Tournament fees typically range $25-50 per player)
Hotel, food & gas costs when traveling to tournaments
Team Uniform (Typically costs $75 for a jersey and shorts)

SPIRIT OF THE GAME

A truly unique and defining element of Ultimate, Spirit of the Game relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player themselves by requiring each player to know the rules and make their own calls, without the help of a neutral official. This underlying principle reinforces mutual respect and trust between opponents; communication and conflict resolution skills; and self-confidence – both on and off the field of play. No other team sport gives youth such an enriching experience.

ABOUT SANTA BARBARA YOUTH ULTIMATE (SBYU)

We are on a mission to create playing opportunities for youth players and assert Ultimate as the sport of choice in Santa Barbara.

In Santa Barbara, we are lucky to have an incredibly rich history of excellence when it comes to Ultimate. The first men’s championship was won by the Condors in 1977. Since then, there have been over 25 national and international championships in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions. While there are numerous ways to play as an adult in Santa Barbara, historically there has been no infrastructure for youth ultimate. In 2014, Santa Barbara Youth Ultimate 501(c)3 was established to “develop first-time, youth ultimate players in Santa Barbara.”

Santa Barbara Youth Ultimate has grown significantly thanks to the generosity of so many supporters!

To date, we have added or grown the following programs:

Renewed our partnership with SB Unified Elementary School A-OK After School program, having introduced ~500 elementary school kids to Ultimate frisbee through the ‘23-’24 school year.

Hosted a Recreational Instructor certification class for our coaches.

Managed High School & Middle school club teams with:

Increased player participation by 50% year over year

Coaching support

Hosting showcase games vs local adult club teams & local school programs

Finding, registering for & subsidizing player/coach costs for travel tournaments

Year 2 of our partnership with NextLevelSportsCamp
