Dear Colleagues,

It's been a great nine years working with you on OSI and other projects. I deeply value the time and expertise you have devoted to this work, and your friendship along with way.

As happens with all public charities like SCI, we need to raise money to keep the wheels turning---small donations from individuals, larger donations from institutions, and ideally even larger donations from foundations and governments. Asking for support is a thankless task, but without asking, we accomplish less than we can. And there's a lot to accomplish.

In 2024, I hope to keep OSI focused on the last mile of working with policymakers around the world to establish effective, sensible, sustainable open policies based on the knowledge, perspectives, and partnerships built by OSI and others. In addition, I will be turning SCI's attention to climate change and disinformation awareness work, two of the most pressing challenges we have created for coming generations.

Our climate change work in 2024 will focus on organizing a conference in Seattle in early 2025 that explores the policy and technology challenges of starting to remove carbon dioxide from the Earth's atmosphere at scale. For this conference, we will bring together thought leaders from around the world, representing all stakeholder groups and regions. There hasn't been a meeting like this yet, and it's desparately needed. I am hoping the lessons we learned from our work in OSI can help create an effective framework for discussion and action on this topic.

Our disinformation work will focus on getting a Disintormation Awareness Training & Education (DATE) program off the ground. Working across disciplines and country boundaries, we will aim to unite a diverse group of experts who have studied disinformation, and combine their insights into practical and effective tools, resources and networks to combat it. Solutions include training thought leaders around the world to counter disinformation; creating educational resources like videos; orchestrating global media campaigns and public policy efforts; and building a global network of disinformation experts.

This is a personal pitch to those of you who have been most closely involved in SCI's and OSI's work over the years to help make sure we can continue making progress.
