At Naturalist Journeys, inspiring conservation is a core value. And while we make conservation donations throughout the year, we like to round out December with a season of giving. This year, as we wrap up our donations, we are thrilled to invite you to give with us to a special cause: A Foundation for a Green Future: Building SCIENCE’s Hub for Conservation Our colleague, Lystra Culzac of St. Vincent, is working to fulfill her dream of building a permanent home for SCIENCE, a St. Vincent NGO dedicated to the conservation of the island’s delicate ecosystem through youth enrichment and education programs. As with many Naturalist Journeys causes, we chose this project based on trusted personal experience. Peg Abbott, Naturalist Journeys’ founder, met Lystra when she was scouting on St. Vincent in 2014. Peg was immediately struck by the island’s lush mountain forests and healthy reefs, but even more so by its people. When they met, Lystra was working with limited resources to bring environmental education to children, running a nature center on a shoestring. She and Peg both recognized that the island’s fragile ecosystem would only last if the next generation cherished it. Her efforts were and are still conservation in action, the evidence in children’s smiles, ignited by learning about birds and nature. During the pandemic, Lystra lost access to the building where she based SCIENCE and has made due with a public park since then. Recently, Lystra secured a property to construct a building, and through Birds Caribbean, her vision of a nature center for children has evolved into a science hub for all ages.
