Dear South Mountain Friends and Families,
The South Mountain YMCA and the Maplewood & South Orange community lost a dear friend last summer—Chris Porter. Chris was more than just a familiar face around town; he was a mentor, a confidant, and an unwavering supporter of our community.
Professionally, Chris was a talented chef who worked locally, a dedicated caddie at the Maplewood Country Club, and a devoted member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. His passion for sports was evident—he served as the captain of the Columbia High School baseball team, and his dedication to the community as a peer counselor left a lasting impact on generations who, like him, found lifelong friendships and their love for sports at the Y.
Growing up in our community, Chris sharpened his basketball skills, and practiced many other sports at the South Mountain YMCA with friends in his childhood right here in MAPSO, just as countless children have done over the years. His presence on the court, and his encouragement off of it truly inspired those around him. The friendships he built, and the lessons he shared continue to shape the spirit of our youth sports programs today.
As part of our Legacy 2025 campaign, I aim to raise $500 to honor Chris Porter’s memory by hanging his name in the rafters—a fitting tribute to someone who gave so much to a community that shaped him from a beautiful boy to a beautiful man.
All proceeds will directly support our youth sports department through the 2025 Annual Support Campaign, providing financial aid to ensure that future generations of children can experience the same joy, growth, and camaraderie that Chris cherished at the Y.
Like Chris, I, too, grew up in this community and even learned to swim at the YMCA. I know firsthand how these programs help shape children’s lives, providing them with not only skills but also lifelong friendships and valuable experiences. Your donation will help keep this tradition alive, giving kids the opportunity to learn, play, and grow in a supportive and enriching environment.
Join us in celebrating Chris Porter’s legacy by making a contribution today. Together, we can honor his memory and continue to support the youth of our community, just as he did.
Donate today and help us honor the Porter family in the rafters—in a place where his legacy can live on for years to come.
Sincerely,
Coach Ariel Duncan
