Save Our Sacred Sites: Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church (790 Humboldt)
A Historic Sanctuary on Humboldt Parkway
Help Us Secure Local Landmark Status
For more than a century, the church at 790 Humboldt Parkway has stood as a steadfast anchor of faith, resilience, and community life in Buffalo. Built in 1911, this striking Gothic Revival structure—designed by architect E. T. Derrick—features soaring stained‑glass windows and a distinctive square steeple that has welcomed generations of worshippers through its doors.
The building first served the Humboldt Parkway Methodist Church, a congregation founded in 1893 as a mission of the former Linwood Avenue Methodist Church. As the neighborhood grew, the Methodists replaced their original wood‑frame chapel with the substantial brick sanctuary that still stands today. They worshipped here until 1962, when demographic shifts led them to relocate.
Two years later, in 1964, the building became the new spiritual home of Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church—a congregation with roots reaching back to one of the most important Black churches in American history: the Michigan Street Baptist Church, founded in 1837. That congregation played a pivotal role in Buffalo’s abolitionist and Civil Rights movements and served as a documented stop on the Underground Railroad, sheltering freedom seekers in its basement before their journey to Canada.
When urban renewal displaced much of the Michigan Street community in the early 1960s, the congregation carried its legacy forward to Humboldt Parkway. Today, Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church continues that long tradition of spiritual leadership, community service, and historic significance—making this building not only architecturally important, but culturally irreplaceable.
