I want to tell you about Makenna, one of our youth ambassadors. She grew up with a cleft lip and palate, and her story shows why community matters so much for young people on the craniofacial journey.

She told us,

Imagine being young and wanting to run, play, and just be a kid, while your body needs time and care after surgery.

Makenna also shared how these early years shaped her confidence. She said,

Later, she found something that made a difference: “This community has meant so much to me. The people, events, and opportunities they create have helped me connect with others who understand what it's like to grow up with a cleft. Their support and scholarships have opened doors for me, and being able to give back to the community that supported me has been incredibly special.”

Your generosity helps build that community. You help create a network where young people feel understood and where families breathe a little easier when medical costs stretch beyond what insurance covers.

Near the end of our conversation, Makenna shared something for families who are just beginning this journey: “Your kid is going to be okay. Better than okay. They’ll be a normal, happy, capable kid with their own unique story. This is just one part of who they are, and with love, community, and good care, they’re going to grow up to be amazing.”
