Imagine a young girl, her eyes lighting up as she builds her first robot, programs her first line of code, or solves a complex engineering challenge. This is the heart of Black Girls Do Engineer (BGDE)—a place where passion meets opportunity, and dreams turn into achievable goals.

Our Beginning

In 2019, our founder, Kara Branch, saw a gap in the representation of Black girls in STEM fields. As an award-winning chemical engineer and mother of three, she knew firsthand the challenges and triumphs of breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry. Kara envisioned a world where girls like her eldest daughter, whose love for STEM sparked at just nine years old, could thrive with the right support. That vision became Black Girls Do Engineer.

Our Mission

At BGDE, we are dedicated to increasing the number of Black girls in STEM fields by providing them with the tools, mentorship, and hands-on experience needed to excel. From ages 6 to 21, our members engage in transformative programs that not only teach them the technical skills of engineering, robotics, AI, and sustainability but also build their confidence to navigate industries where they are often underrepresented.

Our Impact

In just a few short years, BGDE has grown into an award-winning organization impacting over 1,000 girls annually through workshops, mentorship, and community engagement. Our programs go beyond the classroom, fostering financial literacy, college readiness, and leadership skills.

Our Future

As we step into 2025, BGDE is scaling new heights. This year, we’re taking our members to Purdue University for a college tour filled with inspiration and opportunity.

But our journey doesn’t stop here. With your support, we envision a future where every Black girl who dreams of a career in STEM has the tools, resources, and belief in herself to make it happen.
