The Sandra L. Helmers, M.D., M.P.H. Scholarship honors the life and legacy of a pioneering epilepsy physician, researcher, and mentor whose work transformed care for people living with epilepsy and inspired generations of medical professionals.

Dr. Helmers served as Attending Epileptologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and later as Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at Emory University. A nationally respected leader, she authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and advanced groundbreaking research in epilepsy treatment, health outcomes, and public health.

Passionate about equity and education, Dr. Helmers was a strong advocate for women and girls living with epilepsy and for young women pursuing STEM careers. This scholarship continues her mission by supporting students who share her commitment to science, medicine, and service.
