The Project

Read below to see the project that Emma is working on, that will allow her some in person research in England. At the conclusion of the school year (not long after our return from this trip), our upper classmen Scholar Pilgrims will present an eight minute presentation of their project, especially focusing on their in-person research. The Presentations will be recorded and supporters will receive a link where they can view the presentation.

You might think that I'm just a girl who likes clothes, but then you'd be questioning why I am studying at St. Andrew's. My passion for fashion history begins and ends with a love for story, which is well nourished in the St. Andrew's curriculum. On this trip, I am looking forward to seeing much of the eighteenth century clothing that I have been studying, but most importantly, the places and museums holding the history of Philip Astley, the founder of the modern circus. I have been commissioned to build a replica of what Philip Astley would have worn as the eighteenth century gentleman, inventor, and circus equestrian. From the site of his amphitheater in London, to the Philip Astley Centre in Newcastle-under-lyme, I will be researching and gathering inspiration for building the costume that Astley might have worn, and to tell the story of my adventure.
