SciGirls:

We host SciGirls summer camps every year, typically in July, for ages 8-12. Camps cost $365, and with the support of Soroptimist, we would be able to increase our scholarship offerings and provide greater aid for girls who would not otherwise have the chance to participate.

SciGirls Camp:

We created our SciGirls camp to empower girls to pursue science by providing hands-on experiments and activities, and introducing them to amazing female role models at the University of Montana. This is in response to research from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Board of Science, that shows young girls lose interest and confidence in science starting at 8 years old. Though women make up about half the college-educated work force, they make up only a quarter of those in science, computer science, and engineering fields. The National Science Foundation also found that for elementary and middle school girls, “females were less likely than their male counterparts to agree with the statements, “I am good at math” and “I am good at science”.” Next year will be our 15^th year of facilitating SciGirls camps, and we’ve found the impact to be transformational for the girls by creating a supportive and educational environment to learn science.
