OSCAR ORTIZ's Story

It’s September, or SEBStember, in honor of Sebastian.  That means it’s childhood cancer awareness month.

This year at SebastianStrong, we thought we’d do something that would engage the public to help us spread the word around childhood cancer while having some fun at the same time.

I have already agreed to shave my beard (we hit a goal last month and I kind of promised Rose I would).  I know it’s hard to believe that a woman doesn’t enjoy snuggling up to this (point to beard!).   While I’m already committed, I thought it would be nice if others joined me in some sort of challenge.  On SEBStember 25th, I’ll be getting rid of this beauty live on social media and would love others who choose to shave to join me.

That’s where the Shave or Save Challenge comes in.  It’s pretty simple.

1-You can participate whether your face looks like Chewbacca’s or you’re as smooth as a baby’s butt.

2-Just choose what you’re going to do when you reach your goal, SHAVE what you’ve grown or SAVE what you’ve grown.  I know there’s a lot of guys out there who’ve got a lot of pride in their beards, have fun with this and let the world know you need help as your beards are under attack.

3-If you’re unable to grow facial hair you can still participate in two other ways:

-You can nominate someone to register-You can donate directly to a participant or team.

Your help is so critical.  To say the last 5-6 months have been very challenging because of COVID would be an understatement. There are so many in the world who have been directly impacted from the loss of a loved one to losing employment and everything in between. These are truly unprecedented times for the those of us living today.

With all of that, I can't help but to think of how much more challenging it would be if your child was battling cancer at the same time. Aside from the immediate health concerns regarding a virus that's particularly deadly to those with compromised immune systems, the entire hospital experience is so much harder. One of the things I'm grateful for is that Rose and I were able to spend a lot of quality time with Sebastian when he was sick. Particularly during the toughest of times during our journey.  I can’t imagine not being able to see Sebastian and comfort him as he recovered from the surgeries and brutal treatments and in his final days.  Unfortunately, the reality is the 46 new families enter this world  everyday in this country! We need to make it better for them.

I will close with my ask.  Please join the Shave or Save Challenge (or nominate someone) to help us in the fight against childhood cancer and help us spread awareness about childhood cancer!
