WHAT HAPPENED IN TURKEY?

Powerful earthquakes have ravaged southern Turkey and northern Syria, killing tens of thousands and flattening 11,000 buildings.

Homes have been destroyed or left unsafe, and people will have little choice but to sleep in the open, fearing more aftershocks. Around 23 million people could be affected across the two countries.

To make matters worse, temperatures can drop below freezing at this time of year, putting lives at risk.

In northwest Syria, many buildings were already damaged by years of civil war, where some of the worst damage has been reported.

Syria is at breaking point, with 3 million people already displaced by the war. Families face harsh living conditions, freezing temperatures, and diseases like cholera. They have faced the destruction of war, only to be hit again by these events.

HOW IS SHELTERBOX HELPING?

ShelterBox’s emergency response team is in Turkey, developing partnerships and working out how to get supplies to the affected regions.

We expect items such as thermal blankets and solar lights to be needed. We are also considering tents. Providing multi-purpose cash assistance could be an important element to this response giving people who have been left with nothing the flexibility to get what they need.

ShelterBox has experience responding to earthquakes in Turkey, most notably the 2011 Van earthquake. We also have an ongoing program of work supporting people displaced by conflict in Syria.
