Rising star Joe Colwell is returning to the ShowUS stage alongside his new charismatic buddy, Josué, who he met through MFEE’s Entrenadores Escolares bilingual after school program. Joe, an MHS Junior, and Josué, a Buzz Aldrin Middle School 8th grader, work together three days a week, tackling math, reading, and a little of the ups and downs of teen life.

Joe, who learned Spanish as a child from his babysitter and in school, was a little rusty when first joining Entrenadores. “I had never been in a situation where I, as an English speaker, was in the minority,” recalls Joe. “That, alone, has been an eye opener; I have a small window into what some of my English Language Learning peers go through in our schools. It took me a little bit to feel like I could understand most of what everyone was saying, and I certainly didn’t have much math or science vocabulary in Spanish! Now after five months of tutoring everything from algebra to genetics, I can honestly say that my Spanish has gotten much better, and I am so grateful to have become friends with a whole new group of people that I would not have met otherwise.”

Josué is the heart - and spice - in the Entrenadores community. This charismatic young man can make us giggle one minute and share a deep insight the next. He’s destined for stardom - either on the stage or the soccer field. And he’s very excited to have befriended Joe. “Joe is a good guy. He has taught me music and helped me with my songs. I think I am teaching him some things, too - like learning to love banda and mariachi music.”

The dynamic duo have co-written beats for some of Josué’s original lyrics, and on April 30th they’ll be joining forces to perform a very special song that represents the transformation that each of these young men - and their Entrenadores peers - are experiencing from this unique program.
