POWERHOUSE RESIDENCY went from a dream to a prayer to a goal to a DREAM COME TRUE. After about a year of searching for the perfect house, I closed on a place in July '21. The bones were good but the aesthetics weren't quite givinggg.

Over the course of a year, friends, family, and the larger literary and arts community showed up to make the POWERHOUSE dream a reality. During that year, I realized that this space needed to be shared with the community who helped build the space. And with a dearth of residencies and retreat spaces that cater to Black, Indigenous, POC and hardly any for Black women and women of color especially, I knew it was necessary to create an intentional safe place/ retreat space where Black women and WOC artists, activists, creators, makers and writers could exist, rest, relax and BREATHE in the country Catskill Mountain air.

Spring of '23, we officially became a 501c3 non-profit organizartion and welcomed five amazing residents (ceramicist, dancer, poet, queer pop star, and writer) in the space.

In their own words, they described POWERHOUSE as “a livesaver in more ways than I could even understand myself”, “Inspiring, beautiful, cozy, intentional, adored, ” “a landing place”, “a space to feel held in your identity and in your work” and “a supernatural highway.”

POWERHOUSE is possible because of the beautiful community support that made it happen. That's why POWERHOUSE is truly OUR house. And I humbly and graciously thank you for ALL offerings big or small.

In 2024, we hope to raise $24,000. Your support will go directly to:

Mortgage Costs: $19,032 for the year
Utilities(propane gas, water, electric, wifi): $4616.87

TOTAL OVERHEAD COSTS: 23,648.87

As a stretch goal, we'd like to give our residents monetary peace of mind with a modest stipend. And because most residents don't have cars, I would like to buy an electric cargo bike for residents to use to get around our rural town.
