Donating to a 509(a)(2) nonprofit helps because these types of organizations are directly supported by the public and actively provide services to the community. Your donation goes straight to work—funding programs, events, and resources that make a real impact. Unlike private foundations, 509(a)(2) nonprofits rely on contributions and service-related income, which means your support is essential for them to continue operating. Plus, donations are tax-deductible, and you're helping fund a mission that’s accountable, community-driven, and focused on meeting real needs—like the work we do at Spoons of Salt to support people with chronic and invisible illnesses!

Your donations will go towards the following (these are just some of the finances we have for Spoons of Salt:

Storage unit monthly fee- it includes a lot of items like walkers, canes, rollators, transfer chairs, shower chairs, toiletries, clothing in various sizes for weight fluctuation, yoga equipment, etc.
Snacks and drinks for our meetings (usually we try to bring some coffee, electrolyte drinks, and some kind of salty snack)
Decorations for events- birthdays, holidays, disability-awareness days/months some items include:
- Gift bags for new members including: (examples of some stuff that would be in a welcome-bag)
  - electrolyte drink mix powders (usually about 5 each)
  - a dysautonomia awareness ribbon pin (turquoise pin)
  - some fidget toys, awareness stickers
  - a notebook with a positive quote on it
  - a Spoons of Salt pen (notebook and pen are helpful for new members to bring to the meeting to take notes)
  - fabric sleeping eye mask
  - lip balm (all natural with petroleum jelly)
  - natural hand lotion- usually with aloe, vitamin E
Outdoor event supplies
- backpacks (Handicapped Hiking, SOS kayaking)
- telescopic stools for sitting whenever we need without having to use a wheelchair (hiking, camping)
- ear plugs
- folding chairs/blankets to sit on (SOS camping, SOS birdwatching)
- sunscreen, bug spray (SOS camping, SOS birdwatching, SOS hiking)
- t-shirts to stay with group (bright colored Spoons of Salt shirts are given to members every now and then for events)
- cooling devices in warm weather (neck fans, cooling towels, etc. for SOS hiking, SOS kayaking)
- warming devices in cold weather (hot hands, heaters, etc. for SOS camping)
Office supplies (one- time items like staplers, label maker, printer, and constant items like paper, ink, pens)
Gas for driving members to certain group meetings, doctors, etc.
Yoga equipment other exercise equipment that's disability-friendly
Equipment for other wellness activities
Water bottles and different kinds of hydration bottles
Compression wear- shorts, leggings, compression shirts and tank tops, calf compression sleeves, etc.
Purchasing items for flyers, disposable cups/bowls/spoons, etc., things to store member's contact information, items for storing SOS paperwork
Salary for President and Vice President of Spoons of Salt (2)
Salary for Wellness Department of Spoons of Salt (2)
Salary for Social Media Department of Spoons of Salt (3)
Membership fees of other organizations for networking in the area
- Chamber of Commerce ($250.00/year for nonprofits)
Cost of going to conferences/symposiums to spread awareness to others who can speak about it on a bigger platform- Sarah and I usually go to conferences together to help each other retain information and for the other one's safety.
- Fee for tickets to conference (2)

- Lodging/hotel
- Gas/ Rental Car *(if needed)
- Public transit
- Food/beverage for trip
- Products, paperwork, etc for spreading awareness for dynamic disabilities/ invisible illnesses while at conferences
- Fee for setting up informational booth at conferences, festivals, etc. to give out awareness information (and SOS information)
We need a central meeting space that is private for our members. Right now, we are meeting at the public library and only able to operate in person during library hours.
All the other things I forgot! So many things, I can't think of it all!
