Sewing 101: Make a Microwave Bowl Cozy

Just in time for the holidays! Learn or refresh basic sewing skills while you make a
microwave bowl cozy to use in your microwave. These also make great gifts for the
holidays!
Heat a bowl of soup, oatmeal, etc. in this bowl holder while it’s in the microwave. When
you take it out, you won’t burn your fingers; AND, it will keep your food warm while you
eat!
We will have fabric, batting material (both 100% cotton), and printed instructions for you. You
will be able to choose the fabric you prefer from several available, but if you prefer to bring
your own fabric, it must be 100% cotton! You will need 2 squares, each 10” x 10.” You can
bring two different fabrics for each side, or use the same fabric on each side.
What to bring

Sewing machine with a NEW size 70/10 needle. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR MACHINE IS
IN GOOD WORKING ORDER BEFORE CLASS. You just need a simple sewing machine that
sews a straight stitch

Scissors that will cut through cloth and batting material (OR a rotary cutter, clear
quilting ruler, and cutting mat)

At least 10-12 straight sewing pins
Regular ruler or clear quilting ruler
Seam ripper
Disappearing fabric marker pen or other fabric marker
Spool of 100% cotton thread. Medium gray blends with many fabrics, but you may bring
any color.
Optional: thread snips
IMPORTANT: All thread, fabric, and batting must be 100% cotton. It cannot contain any
polyester, nylon, or other synthetic fiber, as they can cause a spark or fire in the microwave.
