My color guard obsession first started when I was very young. Every year I would anticipate plopping myself close to the television to admire the marching bands that performed at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Instead of marveling over the character balloons or freaking out over the santa float at the end, I would cheer for the marching bands, specifically the colorful flags and the happy dancers that I would soon learn to be the color guard.
Color guard soon became a big factor in my life once I entered high school. The funny thing is, I didn't even know what band camp was until someone mentioned it to me. You see, my middle school was fairly new and the high school never visited to persuade the 8th graders to join, so I had to find it out on my own. I'd be lying if I said it went smoothly, it was surely very chaotic. The first day of mini camp, I wore the wrong shoes and brought the wrong sized water bottle. Freshman me had never taken a prior dance class and I just felt..awkward..so very awkward! But as the years progressed, I crept out of my shell more and more, gaining more confidence in my abilities as a spinner and as a person. Color guard has helped me develop strong social and leadership skills that I will carry on with me into college.
My biggest goal (and my biggest dream!) is to march for a drum corp. Drum corp is basically marching band on steroids times ten. It's truly amazing what these organizations are able to put together and overall create a positive environment for their marchers. I just love color guard so much, it's my passion and it's my life. I wouldn't want to do anything else with my life if I didn't have a sabre in my hand. My dream corp is definitely the Blue Coats. Even if that dream seems a bit stretched, I truly believe that I can develop the necessary skill sets in order to obtain this goal.
Covid-19 has definitely taken a toll on my life as of recently. If I had the opportunity to have a REAL season this year, I would grab it and not take advantage it. I want to make every second count if winter season is a go (And fingers crossed hoping that it does happen). Like I said, I am very passionate about this activity and I would love to continue doing it. :)
