The officers and board members of Porthole Players thank you for aiding our mission to increase the social capital of the community through the love of theater.

Last fall 1,821 audience members attended 9 performances of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” - the first show produced by Porthole following the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to a grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund, 328 elementary school students attended a free performance.

While the crisis has abated, low-income families remain underemployed and hundreds of children have endured years of disrupted social, emotional, and intellectual development. This year, board members are focused on operating priorities that will advance equitable access for low-income children and families, communities of color, and individuals with disabilities. Better still, I’m pleased to share that they have offered to match up to $1,500 – dollar for dollar – on new donations and pledges that are designated for general operating support and received by September 30, 2024.

For our upcoming production of “Spirits of Sylvia Beach” in September, we will offer two reduced price “Community Night” performances to the general public. We have contracted certified American Sign Language interpreters skilled at interpreting theatre to provide access to Deaf theatregoers. We are researching organizations, including Kulture City, to obtain Sensory Inclusive Certification, which will allow us to assist those with autism, military veterans with PTSD and adults with a variety of health issues including dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and strokes. We recently partnered with Oregon Coast Community College to offer a theatre improvisation course at its Newport campus, and are exploring other workshop opportunities that will raise community appreciation for the performing arts.
