It was Langston Hughes who penned the powerfully polemical question, “What happens to a dream deferred?” We believe that the solution is entirely dependent on the dreamer.

We dreamed a dream here at The Encore, and it is now a reality!

Birmingham, Alabama has produced a slew of amazing artists, particularly in the African-American community. The Magic City has produced innumerable magical entertainers, from Nell Carter to Reuben Studdard to Erskine Hawkins to Eddie Kendricks.

We’re continuing the city's grand and wonderful legacy at The Encore. Encore Theatre and Gallery is a non-equity performance space that presents year-round contemporary, inventive, and distinctive works to the city.

Here we are truly dedicated to preserving African American theatrical staples and presenting plays by a diverse range of creative voices for a diverse audience.

The venue includes a small main stage, an art gallery, and a studio stage/flex black box room.

Encore Theatre and Gallery for the Magic City is a bold and unique proposal. We continue to use the arts to heal, entertain, educate, and serve the creative community, while unapologetically honoring the African-American experience in the arts.

Our commitment to this type of programming continues to fill a gap in the industry in our area. We are dedicated to telling the stories of often marginalized people. We continue to provide a platform for established artists and to cultivate growth in emerging artists through varied endeavors.

The Encore joins a growing number of African-American theater companies around the country that are dedicated to filling a need for minority performing artists by routinely producing works by minorities and highlighting minority performers' abilities in non-ethnic works.

While our primary focus continues to be on the development of new works by local artists, we also host itinerant troupes.

We believe that the theatrical arts have a unique potential to stimulate and heal the human spirit. There is no other art form that encompasses the entire person or improves one's self-awareness, self-concept, or relationships with others like theater arts.

As we work to increase our reach and resources, we keep one thing in mind: each encounter is an opportunity to use the incomparable power of live theater to affect the hearts and minds of our audience. Especially during difficult times, the performing arts have a crucial role in boosting spirits, bringing people together, and motivating us all.
