Over the past few months, WTS has experienced recurring flooding that has cost our staff countless hours in cleaning labor not to mention the hundreds of dollars spent on cleaning materials and furniture replacement.

The mission of Walls Turned Sideways is to build bridges that connect people in prison, their families, artists, and other community members using art, exhibitions, and political education with a focus on collective liberation, healing and abolition. Over the past year, we have had the pleasure of hosting weekly events in our space, from regular healing circles to birthday parties, film screenings, book talks, art workshops and more in collaboration with our community.

Our ability to hold space is integral to our work, and only punctuated by the increasing scarcity of accessible spaces for community use. Our work is guided by the following principles —

Abolition

We commit to imagining and practicing new forms of accountability where healing and meeting people’s needs are at the forefront. We actively work against systems that incarcerate and enact violence on our communities and we commit to building up resources that do not rely on punishment as a solution to harm. We work to undo the violence of white supremacy in all its forms including but not limited to racism, sexism, classism, ableism, homophobia and transphobia.

Community

We recognize that all of us experienced and caused trauma in the world. We hold firmly to the belief that there is always a way back through care, community and commitment to each other. We strive to use a wide range of communication tools to address disagreements with the understanding that we are working collectively to build strong community bonds. We pledge to move with purpose and intention towards building healing ecosystems.

Experimentation

We believe in radical experimentation! We acknowledge that growth does not happen in comfortable spaces therefore we challenge each other to take risks and try new things. We see experimentation as both the play of materials, sound, movement and more, as a way to exercise our artistic and creative muscles. We also see experimentation as the play with our own relationships and commitments to people and ideas. Experimentation is a form of being vulnerable and learning together, and it ensures mistakes will be made and are part of the process.
