SB 184: Making Gender-Affirming Healthcare a Felony

SB 184 would criminalize medical care for trans minors under age 19, making providing care a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. It also requires educators and medical professionals to out trans youth to their parents.

HB 322: Bathroom Bill & “Don’t Say Gay”

HB 322 bans trans youth from using bathrooms and locker rooms aligning with their gender identity, and in a last minute amendment, limits LGBTQ content in classrooms, mirroring Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Why It Matters

Access to gender-affirming healthcare and support is lifesaving. The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. - and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds. Trans youth whose families support their gender identity have a 52% decrease in suicidal thoughts and a 48% decrease in suicide attempts.

Both laws have devastating consequences, not just for trans youth in Alabama, but for all trans people in the US. They set a dangerous precedent for other states, with lawmakers across the country using them as a launchpad for future attacks on trans youth.
