Help Harley Heal
❤️ Harley’s Story Needs to Be Heard — Please Read, Share, and Support 🛟
Please follow Harley’s page and share her story far and wide. Her journey is one that no dog — and no loving family — should ever have to endure.
Harley is a 2-year-old Whippet and one of our long-term Chopper Foundation companions. To her mom, she is a soul dog, a miracle, and her entire world.
Harley was born with a liver shunt, a serious condition that requires complex and urgent care. After months of searching for answers and fighting for a diagnosis, her mom finally raised the funds needed for surgery. A nonprofit vet clinic stepped forward, offering to perform the procedure at a fraction of the cost.
But instead of correcting Harley’s liver shunt, the vet accidentally closed her main portal vein — the critical vessel supplying blood to her liver. Another veterinarian, who later reviewed her CT scan, said he couldn’t believe Harley was even alive. He removed the ameroid ring immediately and urged her family to seek emergency specialty care.
Harley was taken to a specialist in New York, where they delivered heartbreaking news:
Her case is so unique that no other known example exists in the entire country. Without precedent to guide them, surgery is far too risky. All her mom could do was manage her condition medically and pray for more time.
That was September 2024.
And Harley is still here.
Still fighting. Still trying. Still a miracle.
She now requires a special diet, multiple medications, and bloodwork every three months. But Harley struggles having good days and bad. Despite recent tests coming back “normal for Harley,” she urgently needs care from an internal medicine specialist — possibly back in New York or wherever the best hope exists for her.
Watching her struggle has been heartbreaking. She is just 2 years old. Her mom doesn’t know how much time they have, but they are fighting for every moment.
