The Importance of Angelina Eberly
The Woman - Angelina Belle Peton Eberly, the heroine of the Texas “Archives War,” was a cunning Austin innkeeper in the early days of the Republic of Texas. Her quick-thinking actions prompted a political skirmish with lasting consequences.

The Threat - In December 1842, Sam Houston announced that Austin was no longer the Capital of Texas. Instead, he declared that honor on his namesake town, Houston. He dispatched Texas Rangers to Austin with orders for Texas Land Commissioner, Thomas William “Peg Leg” Ward to remove the Republic of Texas archives from Austin and take them east.

Her Triumph - This secret effort was thwarted by Eberly, who lit a cannon alerting citizens of the theft. Local townspeople chased the wagons north into Williamson County, where the Rangers were forced at gunpoint to surrender the archives. “The Archives War” preserved Austin’s standing as the Capital of Texas.
