Autism in Girls -- Identification and Support

Far more boys than girls are diagnosed with autism. But that might not be because more boys have autism. Often, autism in girls just looks different from the stereotype of autistic behavior. When girls with autism don’t get diagnosed, they miss out on support that can help them understand their challenges, build skills, and excel in school. They might get exhausted from trying so hard to fit in or be bullied because they miss social cues. That can lead to depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem. Therapists might not see that autism is the underlying cause. Getting diagnosed early on is important so girls can get the support they need as soon as possible.

Our presenter, Lila Kimel, PhD, owner of Kimel Psychological Services, LLC in Aurora, CO, provides assessment and treatment for individuals (with a focus on children and adolescents) with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and more. Dr. Kimel also provides psycho-legal consultation in cases related to individuals with developmental disabilities involved in the legal system. She consults with schools regarding how to interpret psychological evaluation reports and how to apply them to the individual needs of a child within the school context.

In her presentation, Dr. Kimel will explore how autism shows up in girls, why masking hides risk, and how support -- such as explicit teaching around consent, pacing, and online safety -- can prevent harm. Concepts to be covered include:

Girls’ masking, misdiagnosis, and different profiles
ADHD overlap and social decoding vs distraction
Special interests as bridges, not barriers
Safety education for consent, pacing, and online traps
Sensory needs and hygiene through puberty
School advocacy, IEP gaps, and expert support
