YOUR SUPPORT CAN TRANSFORM LIVES
At Heartland Scholar House, we are on a mission to help single parents achieve financial stability through higher education by providing wraparound services and affordable housing.
ABOUT HEARTLAND SCHOLAR HOUSE
We provide single parents who we call “Scholars” with a wide range of services, including academic and life skills coaching and advocacy to support them in breaking down barriers to meeting their educational goals. We equally serve their children, who we call “Junior Scholars”.
Each Scholar works with a family advocate and an academic coach to overcome common barriers faced by single parents in school. We leverage community partners with specialized expertise—such as childcare providers, financial literacy educators, and support services for domestic violence, mental health, and nutrition—to break down any and all barriers.
The keystone to our programming is the provision of safe, stable, and low cost housing for participants and their children who are enrolled in a full-time program of study until the completion of a degree program.
We currently operate programming in Anderson, Marion, and Muncie, Indiana.
THE NEED
Poverty disproportionately impacts single-parent households, particularly those led by single mothers. Although pursuing post-secondary education is life changing for single mothers and their children, the obstacles are often insurmountable. While there are approximately 40,000 single mothers attending college in Indiana, they face a low completion rate of just 1.7% for a bachelor's degree due to financial and time constraints.
Heartland Scholar House is the only program in Central Indiana designed to help single mothers break the cycle of poverty, empowering them and their children for a lifetime.
OUR IMPACT
Affiliated with Family Scholar House in Louisville, Kentucky which has operated for 23 years with the following outcomes:
88.6% graduate within four years (national average: 31%).
65% continued their post-secondary education.
81% exit to stable employment.
70% of graduates immediately exit government assistance.
100% exit the program to stable housing.
The children of scholars often go on to forge their own path to self-sufficiency as 82% attend college when they come of age, compared to the national average of 61.4%.
We implement the Family Scholar House Model with fidelity and can not wait for the day that we can report the same statistics in this community.
