Organized by The Warehouse NJ
Story
The Warehouse NJ (TWNJ) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports individuals and families as they transition into permanent housing following a time of crisis such as homelessness, abuse, natural disaster, or political asylum. Since 2019, TWNJ has been “helping to create a new beginning” for these individuals and families by transforming their new housing into a home with furniture and basic household items. TWNJ has furnished homes for more than 2,172 clients in just over three years.
TWNJ collects and inventories gently used furniture and household items for the sole purpose of supporting our clients. TWNJ works closely with our clients who select their own furniture from the TWNJ inventory and then TWNJ coordinates the move-in and placement to ensure that the home reflects the client’s needs and preferences. It is one thing to have a roof over your head, it is quite another to have a new mattress to sleep on, a sofa to sit on, and a table to eat at – all of which TWNJ makes possible. TWNJ completed 781 moves as of June 1, 2023.
Virtually all TWNJ clients are based on referral from a local nonprofit; most have secured an apartment through a government-issued Section 8 housing voucher. Our partner agencies have been supporting the clients in some capacity, but have minimal household items to offer to the clients as they transition away from their services. Community partners do not compensate TWNJ for its services, nor do they share in moving expenses.
Your donations to TWNJ will fund:
- monthly rent, insurance and utilities for warehouse space, where we store gently used furniture donations
- gas, insurance and other expenses associated with our moving truck which is used to pick up donations and move each of our clients
- new mattresses and bed frames. This is a significant expense but new mattresses ensure higher/consistent quality and guarantees availability when needed. To date, only 1 referring agency shares in this expense
- labor - while TWNJ does rely on volunteers as much as possible, we sometimes hire members of the communities we serve on an hourly basis to help with moves.
Thank you for helping us continue to this much needed work.
