There are many families in central Ohio struggling to make ends meet. According to recent report from the United Way of Central Ohio, nearly 40% of households in in our state are living below the ALICE threshold (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), which includes those classified as living in poverty as well as those who are working, but earning limited income. These numbers are on the rise in Franklin County, as well as other surrounding counties in central Ohio, and across the state.
These households often include family pets, who also feel the pinch of poverty and limited resources. In some cases, families must make the tough decision on whether to feed themselves or their pets, or take the heartbreaking step of surrendering their beloved cat or dog to a shelter.
The Tackle Pet Hunger campaign was started over 10 years ago in response to this need. Our goal is to provide temporary pet food assistance to families facing hardship, so that pets can stay in their homes with people who love them, and not end up in our already over-crowded rescues and shelters.
Making a Difference for Hungry Pets & Their Families
Through Tackle Pet Hunger, Ohio Animal Foundation has distributed over 48,000 pounds of cat and dog food to hungry pets in central Ohio. We work with dedicated partners to ensure that food goes immediately to families in need, including those facing homelessness, poverty, or those experiencing a temporary set-back due to health concerns or job-loss.
Many thanks to our 2025 distribution partners Faithful Forgotten Best Friends and the Pet Promise Pet Food Pantry for their awesome work in the community, as well as to our generous sponsor Haus Studio Designs. We couldn't do this without you!
You're invited join us in keeping pets and people together!
Thanks for your support!
