Taking Root- Supporting our Community

All around the country, the Southeast Asian Freedom Network (SEAFN) and our amazing member organizations have been showing the film Taking Root.

Taking Root is a docuseries that amplifies the intergenerational impact of structural violence and demonstrates the power of Southeast Asian refugees resisting and rebuilding in America. It is based in Philadelphia but is a story that Southeast Asian refugee communities across the U.S. also experienced after their resettlement.

SEAFN is partnering with VietLead to bring Taking Root on a global tour over the next year to grapple with our traumatic pasts, heal together, and fight for local and national changes we need through the Southeast Asian Relief and Responsibility (SEARR) Campaign. 

Mainstream narratives about the Vietnam War and its refugees have a dearth of voices that accurately represent our experiences. The tour will also amplify Southeast Asian storytelling shorts in each local area.

As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Wars in Southeast Asia in 2025, it is more important than ever for us to reclaim our refugee story and challenge anti-Black, anti-Asian, and xenophobic narratives.
