UPDATE: February 2022
Last year we shared Tim's story. He was in a hard spot; just getting into rehab, trying to find his footing in life, wanting more yet still unhoused. We asked for your help and YOU came though for Tim.
The funds donated over the last year have paid for rent assistance, medical and prescription co-pays, groceries, clothes, housewares, dog care, a used electric wheelchair, laundry, cleaning supplies, and much more! This message is from
Brook, Tim's MH advocate & friend:I met Tim in August of 2020 replying to a request for food that Tonya Coy had posted on Intellihelp USA.
I could have never imagined that that request for help would have turned into a most untraditional friendship.
Over the last year I have seen Tim go from utter despair; spending each day looking for a place to sleep and a meal to eat, to actively engaging in the critical medical services that will make life-long difference in his health and happiness.
He has safe, supportive housing through Foundation Communities. He has the most adorable puppy named Haylee that brings joy and companionship to his darkest days. He has worked tirelessly on prosthetics rehab and attended more doctor appointments than the average person would have in decades.
The prosthetics process has been so painful and difficult for me to watch and for him to endure, but he has not lost hope. The reality is that Tim typically has 2-3 doctor appointments every week. His needs are not those of most people recovering from homelessness. Tim lives with constant chronic pain and permanent disabilities as a result of his accident.
Through all of this he continues to amaze me with his tireless effort at a better future. He has recently engaged with vocational rehab to see how he can become gainfully employed with all of his challenges. He makes few excuses and complains less than he should.
He inspires me to love people fully and without judgement. He reminds me that each day is a gift and that none of us can do this alone.
Tim’s monthly disability check is literally impossible to live off of. His fundraiser supplements the absolute basics and essentials that most of us take for granted.
Your generosity has absolutely changed his life. We are so grateful!!! Brook
Original Post, Jan 2021.
Almost 3 years ago Tim woke up, on his 24th birthday, from a 2.5 month medically induced coma to find out that he had been in a car accident that took his legs, his fingers, and left him with disfiguring burns on 80% of his body and collapsed lungs. He spent 6 months in the hospital recovering from amputations and burn wounds and went through countless surgeries.
Tim suffers from chronic pain and PTSD as a result of the accident and relapsed into self-medicating with illegal drugs, a struggle he had at the time of his accident. For the last year Tim has been homeless in Austin, at times living in a homeless camp in a tent. He has been taken advantage of, stolen from and most importantly his mental and physical recovery from the accident was put on hold as he found it impossible to attend doctor’s appointments while being homeless.
Prior to Tim’s life changing accident he was working in the oil fields in Moulton, Texas and taking care of his wife and 2 daughters. He loved being a family man. The accident and his substance abuse caused him to lose his family. A situation that is very painful but that he is working through.
Tim began a 10 week treatment program in December 2020 after hitting a desperate low. The program is helping him to address substance abuse, medical needs and critical life skills to get him back on track. Since being in the treatment program Tim has committed to sobriety, started his GED, started care for much needed dental surgery, he has seen a pain management doctor that plans to surgically implant a life changing pain management device, and has begun the process of being fitted with prosthetics. All in just 3 weeks.
All donations will be managed to assist in Tim’s long term physical and mental recovery. Donations are needed to help with the following items-identification replacement, dental surgery costs, medical costs, housing starting mid March, food, clothes, transportation to medical appointments, and cell phone (to name a few).
