We’re a group of women with the widely ambitious goal of eradicating racism and we need your help us at this critical moment. In response to widespread efforts to roll back civil rights gains and the intensifying social polarization within our communities, we decided in 2020 to explore the causes and solutions to the issue working with over 350 Black and White women from across the country to understand what it takes to build social trust and solidarity. This documentary follows our journey.

Our team has personally funded this project to date, including over 150 hours of filming, postproduction, and 23 rough cuts. It’s more powerful than we had dared to imagine when we started and now, need the last bit of funding to complete the final cut and share our learnings with the widest possible audience. Your financial support will help us complete the editing process, obtain copyright clearance and fair use review and launch our marketing strategy. Estimated completion for advanced screening viewing is November 2023.

Our Why

Our documentary, Trust in Black & White focuses on women for a simple but powerful reason: women are not only the gatekeepers of culture, but women are also agents for any sustainable change. Women are the key to social progress. Women are often the first to identify problems within their communities and are motivated to act. Women are influential in perpetuating – or shifting - the values, norms, and ideas that are passed from one generation to the next.

Yet, over the past decade, mistrust and fear has intensified in our communities, especially between Black and White women. The consequences of this fear are distrust and isolation when there could be solidarity across shared interests.

What’s needed as a catalyst for racial equity is social trust…especially between White and Black women. It’s challenging given the differences in our lived experience and attitudes not to mention the historical baggage we all carry, but we’ve seen that it’s possible. In fact, we have documented it in this film.

Gender solidarity is a good in and of itself. Yet, it is also key to addressing a premier challenge of our time…systemic racism. Women, particularly Black and White women in solidarity, can be a powerful force in breaking down the barriers that keep systemic racism in place.

We focused first on White and Black women as social scientists have named these racial identity groups as at the top and bottom of America’s hidden caste system. We believe starting with Black and White women will create a pathway to equity and inclusion for anyone for whom “woman” is a meaningful identifier or experience.

Our Story

The work began when Debbie, as a Black psychologist and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) professional called her psychologist friend, Lori, who is white to share her belief that trust between Black and White women is a critical factor to lessening the racial divide. She agreed and readily signed on to exploring the topic with Debbie. We were quickly joined by Jo and other close friends and a circle of trusted women colleagues who shared this vision. The Social Trust Project was born.

After spending a year facilitating 29 Listening Circles with almost 350 women across the United States, we know that many of you share our widely ambitious goal of eradicating racism. As a result, the Social Trust Project quickly became a movement and then a non-profit organization with a dedicated and fantastic board of directors.

Getting to We is dedicated to helping people understand their shared, core identity as humans and relate to each other without fear. We create learning communities, research-backed resources, digital tools, visual media, DEIB edutainment, and competency-building learning experiences that create a better society for everyone. We believe that intentional multicultural, multiracial living provides us with the experiences necessary to turn us and them into We.

We’ve used the transformative nature of film to capture the message of gender solidarity to achieve racial equity and have over 150 hours of great footage from our Bridging and Bonding Women’s Social Trust Retreat Weekend; national and international content expert interviews; and Black and White women group experiences filmed in Montgomery and Selma, Alabama, Boston, and Los Angeles. Trust in Black & White is the first of three documentaries on the theme of enhancing gender solidarity to achieve racial equity.

We’ve started something critically important. Now we are ready to continue the Social Trust Movement and complete this documentary with you!

We are in the final stages of the postproduction and so close to the finish line! Your support is what will make the difference. We have a fabulous editor who has not missed a deadline on the production schedule. Once copyright clearance and fair use review is completed, we will be ready to launch our advanced screening strategy and buzz-building marketing campaign.

We believe that people support what they help create. Our team has personally invested in this project as independent filmmakers and a non-profit to get us to this stage. We now need your support to help us complete this documentary and bring it to the widest audience possible.
