What's a doula? A doula is a nonclinical support worker that provides continuous emotional, informational, and physical support for individuals before, during, and after labor & delivery. Doula support is widely acknowledged as an evidence-based pathway to improve pregnancy outcomes and experiences and reduce birth-related medical interventions.

Cost of doula care

Private doulas charge an average of $1500 or more for their services. Unfortunately, Medicaid and most private insurance plans do not currently reimburse for doula care, so costs must be covered out of pocket. Community-based doulas provide free or low-cost perinatal services to marginalized community members who stand to benefit the most from additional support. The cost is generally covered by grants and donations. We are establishing a Community-Based Doula Fund to bridge the financial gap, so mothers with lower income also have access to doula care.
