About Urban ArtWorks

Established in 1995, Urban ArtWorks is a Washington-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Thirty years ago, what began as an effort to address graffiti in the SODO neighborhood became something much bigger -- a movement to engage young people, artists, and communities to transform our neighborhoods with art.

Today, Urban ArtWorks is a home for creativity, mentorship, and belonging. Our mission is to engage youth, artists and communities in the creation of public art that inspires connections and honors their voices. Through paid mural apprentice programs for teens, partnerships with K-12 schools, and commissioned and community murals, Urban ArtWorks is breaking barriers - one wall at a time.

Last year, we co-created 102 artworks with more than 2,650 people, including:

195 paid youth apprentices. Youth apprentices in our programs identified as: 73% BIPOC, 38% LGBTQIA+, and 54% low-income.
1,593 K-12 students
89 commissioned and teaching artists
757 community volunteers

And in 2025 we have already engaged 172 youth and more than 800 volunteers!
