Immediate Support Needed in Maui: Your Donation Can Provide Critical Aid to Women and Children in Crisis Now.

What Makes You Feel Beautiful (WMYFB) embarked on a mission to empower girls and women in Maui, registering as a 501(c)(3) organization in April 2019. However, our journey was met with unforeseen challenges as the onset of COVID-19 delayed our paperwork for almost two years, preventing us from applying for grants or fundraising during this critical time. Despite these obstacles, WMYFB persevered, supporting itself through community partnerships and the generosity of local small businesses, friends, family, board and community members. In 2022, we began rebuilding with slow momentum and in 2023, received our first small grant. But just as we were gaining traction, the devastating Maui fire on August 8, 2023, took a toll on 1/3 of our island, leaving our organization struggling to keep up with the escalating needs of our community. The fires not only affected the lives of our clients but also impacted our supporters, as many local businesses that had been our pillars of support suffered losses or were severely affected.

Our Current Structure

Currently, WMYFB functions with one full-time staff member who receives a stipend and nine dedicated volunteers. Despite our small team, we are committed to making a big impact in our community.

Urgent Call for Support

In the wake of these challenges, WMYFB faces unprecedented hardships. With over 420 clients still without homes, suffering from loss of family, employment, and stability, the need for support has never been more critical.

The Overlooked Reality of Maui

Hawaii’s often perceived as a paradise of beaches and luxury resorts, but behind this facade lies a community suffering from alarming statistics. Hawaii faces a high rate of poverty, with single parents, particularly single women with children, being the most economically insecure group. Additionally, 85% of non-marital teen births occur among poor or near-poor teens, significantly hindering the educational and career prospects of these young girls and women.

Our Mission and the Maui GEMS Initiative

Founded to inspire confidence, leadership, and empowerment, WMYFB has been a beacon of hope for many. Our Maui GEMS initiative, launched months prior to the fire crisis, aims at rebuilding our marginalized communities starting with our youth. This program provides mentorship, professional experience, and skill development to young girls, empowering them to become the leaders of tomorrow.

The funds raised will go directly towards providing support, food, and essential services to those affected by the fires, as well as supporting the Maui GEMS initiative.
