Every child deserves a safe, permanent home. Voices for Children CASA wants to make this a reality for the children of Southeast Missouri. When a child is removed from their home due to abuse and neglect, a judge appoints a CASA to advocate for the best interests of the child while in foster care. CASA volunteers serve as the voices for children in protective care. A child’s Voice is heard when a CASA advocates for their specific needs in court. This is fundamental to our mission.

Events of this unprecedented past year and a half make our mission even more vital to serve children in protective care. The rate of child abuse increases during periods of heightened stress. Hospitals and support agencies across the nation are reporting more severe child abuse injuries. Teachers and school administrators are reporting a substantial increase of child abuse and neglect cases. At-risk children face greater risks when their adult support system is compromised as it has been during the ongoing pandemic. Now, more than ever, at-risk children need visibility and consistent support. Having a stable relationship with a supportive adult, like a CASA, can help children do well, even when facing significant hardships. Our volunteers make a positive impact because:

• They are trained to understand the impact of trauma on children.

• They spend time with children and the people in their lives. They talk to service providers, teachers and social workers to gather information that will help them make informed recommendations to the court.

• Based on what they learn, our volunteers also advocate for services that promote healing and resilience.

Children with CASA ‘s perform better in school, are more likely to receive help for their specific needs and find safe, permanent homes. We want to serve all children in need of a CASA in Cape, Perry, Bollinger, Scott and Mississippi counties. Due to altered program demands and continued alignments to meet the needs of the children, this year’s fundraising deficit represents a significant impact to these needed adjustments.
