Organized by Wooden Boats for Veterans
Story
Wooden Boats for Veterans (WBFV) was founded in 2016 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit private operating foundation by service-disabled military veterans and operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, with affiliate participating in our mission across the United States.
Our mission is to offer veterans a path for restoring overall health and well-being, by getting them on the water with sailing instruction and teaching new skills through wooden boat restoration. Through common purpose and teamwork, they will rediscover inner strengths in the camaraderie of fellow veterans.
Elements of our veterans sailing program include the following:
SAILING
CLOVER requires great teamwork to make her sail, so while on board the emphasis is on leadership and team cohesion. From the moment you step aboard you will be an integral part of the crew and involved in all aspects of sailing. You will have a chance to learn all aspects of traditional sailing from our professional deck crew, with the chance to steer the ship, plot our course on the chart, complete log book entries, climb the rigging, and experience the beautiful coastline!
FAMILY SAILING
Our aim is to help families of veterans and future veterans re-engage in a completely new environment. For most, sailing will be a new experience and family members will have to work together to become a great crew. The yacht will be skippered by an experienced captain so you can take part in as much or as little sailing as you like. You will explore different locations such as Angel Island and enjoy a lunch aboard.
COMPETITIVE RACING
If you enjoy being in the fresh air and part of a team we invite you to try the thrill and challenge of sail racing. Get in touch to ask us about racing or regatta opportunities in the San Francisco Bay. Whether you’re a novice or experienced sailor we can help teach you many aspects of racing in a friendly and supportive environment.
BOAT MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION
WBFV emphasizes hands-on participation in the preservation of wooden boats. The heritage wooden boats represent are well articulated, as is the offer to provide competencies in maintenance of these boats.
WBFV serves as a gateway to vocational opportunities in the marine industry. Robust partnerships with organizations (including the American Sailing Association, Marine Institute, and Northwest Center for Wooden Boat Building) enable WBFV to bring unique vocational opportunities in the marine industry.
