Fort Bragg Farmers Market every Wednesday, weather permitting.
Seed Library at the Caspar Community Center on Sundays from 3-4 pm. Drop off seeds, check out our new seed library, help clean seeds, or just come to chat.
January 5th at Ridgewood Ranch.
January 13th at the Noyo Food Forest in Fort Bragg, 1-3:30 pm.

What will the SeedMobile do?

Workshops

We are traveling around Mendocino County in the fall and winter, hosting seed-saving workshops. Gardeners can bring unprocessed seed and plant material to the workshops and receive instructions from experienced volunteers on cleaning their seeds.

Local Seeds

This project will facilitate seed sharing through pooling seeds from gardeners & farmers. Growers will have a chance to grow seeds that have been grown in the area previously and are known to do well.

We'll distribute them at all of the Mendocino County Sed exchanges scheduled January- March, at workshops, and at the Fort Bragg Farmers Market. Once we have enough seeds and volunteers, these seeds will be available at the Mendocino County Seed Libraries in Ukiah, Willits, Round Valley, Point Arena and Fort Bragg.

This project is still evolving! Things may change based on your feedback and support.

Why is This Important?

Seed Adaptation & Resiliency: Seed saving allows gardeners to select seeds from plants that thrive in their specific climate challenges and growing conditions. Over time, even many warm-season crops like corn and melons can adapt to cool summers. This ensures that we are maintaining seeds that thrive in our local climates and can remain resilient even with the impacts of climate change.

Building Community: Saving seeds together helps to build community and connects gardeners. It is difficult for one person to grow and save all the seeds they may need. Sharing in this work and making it a community effort is not only essential for its success but also makes the process a lot of fun!

Food Security: Seed saving helps ensure long-term food security by providing gardeners with a source of seeds they can rely on, even if commercial seed companies can no longer provide seeds.

The Mendo SeedMobile is a collaboration with:

Xa Kako Dile: An indigenous women-led and directed non-profit organization on a working farm. Decolonizing agriculture. Healing the Land and People. Providing the seed cleaning screens and access to the cargo van.

Garden Friendly Community Fort Bragg: Dedicated to ensuring and sustaining food security in Fort Bragg by providing and supporting community gardening plots and workshop space.

Going to Seed: Inspiring a shift in agriculture towards adaptation, community, and diversity. Support through our Community Seed Projects, including educational materials and volunteers.

The Yokayo Seed Project: a free seed library committed to increasing the capacity of our community to grow wholesome food and foster community resilience.

We're looking forward to collaborating with seed savers, gardeners, community gardens, and farmers all over the county!
