Story
Mountain Roots Education has been providing farm and garden education in Teton Valley for the last 16 years. Through the school gardens program, students learn how to grow their own healthy food as they take part in all of the steps from starting the seeds and nurturing the young plants, to weeding and eventually harvesting and preparing vegetables from their garden. Being involved in every aspect of the garden helps teach students responsibility and the value of hard work in a community with a rich agricultural history. The local farm field trips we do each year allow students to learn about what is entailed in managing a small-scale sustainable farm, some of which include animals such as goats, cows, chickens and pigs. Exploring in the garden and on the farms, students are able to connect what they are learning about garden ecology to the natural world around them.
In addition to our school garden program, we host workshops on sustainable living practices such as hide tanning, wild edible plants, no-till gardening, regenerative landscaping, cheese making, and more. These workshops offer a way for community members to share knowledge that preserves our mountain heritage, building a strong community and a healthy environment.
Mountain Roots Education’s work depends on you. Without your generosity, our programming wouldn’t be possible. We are building new school gardens, updating and expanding our established school gardens, and we are excited to grow both our school garden programs and our workshop offerings. Thank you for your support!
