Washington iGEM is an interdisciplinary team of students who run a synthetic biology laboratory and conduct independent research with the help of graduate students and University of Washington professors. We participate in the annual iGEM Competition, the premiere international synthetic biology project competition started at MIT in 2004.

Since 2008, our team has provided undergraduates with unique and exciting opportunities. Offering an alternative to traditional learning in the classroom, our iGEM team offers the opportunity to go through the design-build-execute cycle of a student-run research and engineering project. iGEM offers experiential, realistic research experience combined with focused learning, preparing students for real research positions in the rapidly advancing world of synthetic biology.

In synthetic biology, we harness the power of living systems, modifying small organisms like yeast and bacteria to perform tasks that can improve nearly every area of life, including agriculture, medicine, and the environment.

This year, our project involves creating engineered nanobodies (special antibodies found naturally in camels) with applications in a wide range of fields, including detecting medical and environmental toxins and creating bio-based logic.

iGEM projects are not just research, but also include hardware & software development, design, entrepreneurship, outreach, and public engagement. Team members are trained to be independent problem-solvers and troubleshooters, and gain real-life experience discussing with and pitching ideas to other scientists and members of the public alike.

Every season, starting in the spring, our team works with UW synthetic biologists and members of the community to design and complete a novel research project. Much of our project development happens in the summer. In the autumn, we present our findings at the iGEM International Giant Jamboree, held in Boston. The Jamboree offers students an experience like no other: a chance to network and discuss each others' experiences and novel projects.

This amazing opportunity for undergraduates wouldn't be possible without help from supporters like you. Every donation you make will support innovative biotech research, help students gain access to hands-on opportunities, and promote dialogue between scientists and the public.

Despite the support of many entities in and out of UW, we have yet to reach our funding goal for this season. We would like your help to raise $5,000 needed to fully fund our project!
