What Is GAPP?

The German American Partnership Program (GAPP) is a long-standing exchange initiative supported by the U.S. and German governments to promote educational collaboration and cultural exchange between American and German secondary schools. At Benjamin Franklin High School, GAPP is a cornerstone of our German program and a transformational experience for participating students.

Our Partner School: Willi-Graf-Gymnasium, Berlin

Willi-Graf-Gymnasium is a public secondary school in Berlin known for its strong academic programs and international focus. Located in one of Europe’s most dynamic cities, the school offers students direct exposure to German history, culture, and contemporary life. Franklin and Willi-Graf-Gymnasium have built a meaningful partnership based on mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to global education.

How the Exchange Works

Students are paired with a host student and family
Participants attend regular classes at the partner school and complete a GAPP project with their hosts
Students experience daily life, transportation, and school culture abroad
The exchange is reciprocal: students host their partners in New Orleans and later travel to Berlin

This structure ensures authentic cultural immersion and lasting personal connections.

Who Can Participate

The GAPP exchange is open to Benjamin Franklin High School students who meet program requirements and demonstrate academic responsibility and maturity.

Participation typically involves:

Hosting a German exchange partner for 3 to 4 weeks during the academic year
Traveling to Germany as part of the reciprocal exchange for 3 to 4 weeks over teh summer
Active engagement in pre-departure preparation and cultural activities

Program Support & Fundraising

While GAPP is supported by partner organizations, families help cover travel and program expenses. Fundraising events and donations play a vital role in:

Reducing student costs
Supporting visiting exchange students
Funding cultural excursions and group activities

Community support ensures that this life-changing opportunity remains accessible to Franklin students.
