How to discuss whiteness in a society that attacks the concept of white privilege.

Cid Kelly is a long-time advocate in the community. She has been involved in Omaha

Table Talk, where we first met. Cid has participated in several book discussions on

racism and on how to navigate those critical topics without becoming defensive. We will

explore some of those initial encounters with others that have helped in this

transformation of being on the front lines. Ms. Kelly has been a teacher and substitute

teacher and, at one point, taught a Black History Course in the Public Schools. There

will be a series of candid questions that can offer others, including bystanders, including

whites, opportunities ty learn how to challenge the inherent racism within organizations

and systems that practice nefarious segregation in society.

We have a governor who made a statement that Palestinian children and people are

socialized to murder other people, and he also made comments about a Nebraska

Chinese reporter being a member of the communist party based on her race, and many

Nebraskans who should have challenged those statements looked the other way. The

question often raised when does one take a stand on such matters? This discussion will

offer participants the opportunity to talk about whiteness from a white perspective.
