Ria Hawks' Story

I co-founded Intertwine Arts in 2015 while working as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, supporting children facing cancer and serious blood disorders. For these patients and their families, often feeling suspended in the uncertainty of treatments and hospital visits, weaving became a source of calm, joy, and renewed self-confidence.

As I approach my tenth-year anniversary leading Intertwine, I’m making a special appeal.  The mission of Intertwine Arts is to inspire creativity, joy, and self-confidence through free-form weaving for people of all ages with disabilities or chronic illness. I am incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. Today, we partner with 18 different organizations, reaching people from children battling cancer to adults living with Alzheimer’s. Our ten talented Teaching Artists lead 60 weaving programs each month. In 2024 alone, we’ve already touched the lives of over 500 unique participants ( 2400 Total, as most artists return weekly) We’ve reached a pivotal moment. To build on this momentum and ensure Intertwine’s future, it’s time to welcome a new leader who will carry our mission forward. To make this transition possible, we need to raise funds to hire an Executive Director.

Your donation will be vital in shaping the next chapter of Intertwine, helping us continue to bring joy, connection, and creativity to many who might otherwise never experience the magic of weaving.

Every Wednesday, I teach at Visions, an Intertwine partner serving the blind and visually impaired. It was there I met "Mary the Artist," as she proudly calls herself.  Mary has been blind  most of her life,  However, she held a viviid image of the sea, and her dream was to capture it in a tapestry. Together, we talked about colors, and she chose the textures  and hues to weave the sea in her mind's eye. She did the weaving on a cardboard loom.  It was her idea go weave in the seashells.  She imagined an angel in the blue sky, and I had a clay angel at home that fit perfectly.

Experiences like this are the reason I believe so passionately in Intertwine’s mission.

Thank you for your generosity and support. Your contribution makes a difference!
