Please support a family of asylum seekers with two young children!

This family entered the country in late summer and was dealt a very difficult hand, which has left them unable to access any services for which people in their situation are usually eligible. This has left them without housing, food, clothing, or funding. Because they are now asylum seekers, they will not be able to receive their work permit for a minimum of 6 months. CASP was unfortunately already over capacity when this family was brought to us, so are only able to offer case management services unless we secure additional funding for this family. They are very close to losing their housing, and we are hoping that our community can come together and help us support them with housing and food until they are able to work.

While we are unable to share the family's photo at this time for their privacy and safety, their support team can attest that the baby has the most ridiculous chubby cheeks, the preschool-aged daughter hugs everyone she meets and enjoys braiding your hair while you fill out paperwork, and the parents invite everyone who helps support them over for lunch and sends them home with leftovers. While we would love for everyone to be able to experience how lovely this family is, we must protect their privacy while their legal case is pending. We ask that you consider donating to help support them in this very difficult time.

What does my donation do?

-Buys them a monthly gift card to the grocery store

-Funds housing costs until they are able to work

-Provides winter boots for the family-- we have gotten coats and scarves secondhand, but boots are proving difficult!

-Pays for basic personal care and hygiene items

-Pays for heating costs for the winter

-Buys baby care items that cannot be secondhand (pacifiers, diapers, etc.)

-Medical help for the parents; the children qualify for insurance, but the parents do not

-Interpretation; this is often forgotten about in the cost of helping a family, but neither of our staff speak their language!

10/23/24 Update: 🎊 Thank you-- we hit our first goal! 🎉

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported this family. We have reached our initial goal in less than two weeks; not all of them are reflected on this page, but some wonderful donors sent in checks, which got us to our first goal! It has been incredibly inspiring and heartwarming to see how much the community has come together to support them.

The family is doing well—they have recently moved into a host home, where they are able to stay until the end of December. The older daughter is getting enrolled in preschool, and the baby just started pulling herself up on people’s legs and furniture. Their new host home is on a farm with a variety of animals, which the kids are very excited about. They also have an incredible attorney, which has given them a lot of reassurance in this difficult time.

So far, the fundraiser has enabled us to pay the overdue rent for their previous place, get winter clothing for both children, basics for mom and dad, and pay for groceries! Next on the list are boots for the adults, a phone plan so that they can communicate when they are somewhere without WiFi, and planning for utilities for a VT winter. We are working out a budget to get them through the period where they are unable to work, and the initial support they will need once they get their own apartment and become independent-- with what you all have helped us raise, we are able to sustainably support them until March!
