Meet Sarah, a mother of two who felt overwhelmed and isolated when her youngest child, Mia, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just six years old. Like many families facing a new chronic illness diagnosis, Sarah was flooded with questions: How will Mia navigate school? How can I keep her safe? Will she ever feel like a normal kid again?

Enter the Diabetes Network of Arizona. Through our family-focused programs, Sarah and Mia have been preparing to attend their first diabetes camp in March 2025, an experience they eagerly anticipate as a chance to connect with others and learn in a supportive environment.

Meanwhile, Sarah connected with other parents who understood her fears and challenges. She found comfort in their shared stories and practical advice. Through the Betic Buddy mentorship program, Sarah was paired with an experienced mentor who guided her through meal planning, managing school routines, and advocating for Mia’s needs. Suddenly, Sarah no longer felt alone—she had a community standing beside her.

The impact didn’t stop there. The family joined our EZ Healthy Fresh program, learning how to prepare nutritious meals together while understanding how food affects blood glucose levels. This hands-on education not only improved Mia’s diabetes management but also brought the family closer, turning mealtime into a source of connection and joy.

Sarah’s story is just one of many. At the Diabetes Network of Arizona, our mission is to ensure that every person impacted by diabetes receives the knowledge, resources, and support they need to live a fulfilling life. From organizing camps that foster lifelong friendships to providing one-on-one mentorship that offers unwavering support, we are changing lives every day.
