Story
Help us take a big step forward into a sustainable future for Ithaca's community-owned, independent bookstore. We are transforming the vacant space next to the store into a vibrant and comfortable community space for reading and writing, events, performances, workshops, markets, and whatever else you want! This room will enable us to expand our literary offerings AND strengthen the bookstore's finances so we can keep providing you with the very best new books as they scroll off the presses.
Two generous coop owners have come forward with pledged donations totaling $7000, and one of those owners has worked with a contractor to generate a renovation plan. The reading room has sat empty for years and we've long daydreamed about transforming it. With these two donations we are very close to making that daydream a reality. All we need is you to put us across the finish line. This plan is the first part of a two-phase plan: first, we will create an events space, and then we hope to work with a community partner to create a cafe.
Click here to read the full renovation plan and the rationale behind it, complete with cost estimates and revenue projections. Work will begin as soon as we've raised $18,000. We hope to complete the room before the third annual Ithaca is Books Festival in August 2023. EVERYONE who donates here will see their name on a plaque or wall painting inside the completed room, honoring the many people who have come together to enhance our store. It takes a community!
The design is still evolving, but here is a sneak peek of the concept. We're aiming for light, bright, clean, and welcoming.
